TEAMS is a non-profit organization that advocates for children with special learning needs in the school system. TEAMS empowers and trains parents and professionals to navigate the school system’s education. TEAMS helps to unify home, school, and community, by building a strong foundation for tomorrow.
If your child meets any of the following TEAMS can assist you:
- One or more years behind
- Needs special education supports or services
- Has an IEP (Individualized Education Plan)
- Has a 504/IAP plan
- Behavior issues that are causing multiple suspension
- Chronic medical issues that are causing them to miss school regularly
TEAMS serves children in seven parishes in North West Louisiana. Bossier, Bienville, Caddo, Claiborne, DeSoto, Red River, and Webster. If you need education advocacy and TEAMS doesn’t serve your area, please feel free to contact our office; we can still help.
Navigating the school system is difficult for many families. Parents struggle with knowing what steps need to be taken to start the process for their child to receive education support. This process typically begins with an SBLC (School Building Level Committee) meeting. TEAMS advocates assist the parent in setting up and attending the meeting; this gives parents a first-hand understanding of the process.
Special education is a service, not a place. Children can often show progress in school through RTI (response to intervention) without needing an IEP or 504 services. Children who are gifted and talented also require an IEP. Receiving education services and supports are not a one-size-fits-all; that’s why services should be looked at individually, based on what the child needs to be successful.
